About

Alphabettes.org is a showcase for work, commentary, and research on lettering, typography, and type design. Our loose network is here to support and promote the work of all women and nonbinary people in our fields. Currently (November 2023), Alphabettes has 300+ members from around the world in various areas and levels of activity.

This blog was originally assembled on a whim in August 2015 by Amy Papaelias and Indra Kupferschmid (as an original suggestion by Pooja Saxena that “we should start a blog”). One year later, the site underwent a refresh, thanks in huge part to Nicole Dotin. The current headline typeface is Pilot Semi-Bold by Aleksandra Samuļenkova and the body typeface is Dover Serif Text by Robin Mientjes. Our past headers are here.

All authors hold the copyright to their content, work, spelling mistakes and grammar. (As you can tell, many of us are non-native English speakers, but we think diversity and spontaneïty are more fun than a strong editorial hand.) You can read our privacy policy here.

We’re also not really on Twitter anymore but on Mastodon and Instagram. And if you must, you can email us.

Alphabettes Code of Conduct

Alphabettes is dedicated to providing a respectful, harassment-free community for everyone. We do not tolerate harassment or bullying of any community member in any form because of, i.a., gender, sexual orientation, ability status, physical appearance, race, ethnicity, age, religion, or political affiliation. This does not only extend to members, but to anyone who chooses to become involved in the larger Alphabettes community of collaborators, contributors and supporters through events or interactions.

Harassment includes offensive verbal/written/electronic comments related to personal characteristics or choices, sexual images or comments in public or online spaces, deliberate intimidation, bullying, stalking, harassing photography or recording, sustained disruption of talks, conversations, online chats, messaging, electronic or physical meetings or other events, inappropriate physical contact, or unwelcome sexual attention. Participants asked to stop any harassing or bullying behavior are expected to comply immediately.

If a participant engages in harassing behavior, representatives of the community may take reasonable action they deem appropriate, including warning the offender, expulsion from any Alphabettes platform, activity and communication channel to resolve the issue.

If you are being harassed, notice that someone else is being harassed, or have any other concerns, please act to intercede or ask for help from any member of the Alphabettes community or website admin.
